Bird of the Month

Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber)

A Jewel of the Tropics! This month, we spotlight one of Trinidad and Tobago's most iconic and vibrant species—the Scarlet Ibis! Known locally as the "Red Ibis," the Scarlet Ibis is Trinidad's national bird. Celebrated for their dazzling scarlet plumage and graceful presence in our wetlands. The Scarlet Ibis is native to tropical South America and parts of the Caribbean. These birds thrive in mangrove swamps, mudflats, and shallow coastal lagoons where they forage for their favorite foods, including crustaceans, small fish, and insects. The scarlet coloration that defines the ibis is derived from pigments in their diet, primarily from eating crustaceans like shrimp, which are rich in carotenoids.

As one of Trinidad and Tobago’s national birds, the Scarlet Ibis is a proud emblem of our rich biodiversity and can be seen gracing the Coat of Arms alongside the Rufous-vented Chachalaca (Cocrico). The Scarlet Ibis also plays a significant role in our country’s ecological health, as it helps maintain the balance of coastal ecosystems.

Today, the Scarlet Ibis faces significant challenges, including habitat destruction and illegal poaching. In response, Trinidad and Tobago have taken steps to protect this remarkable species, such as designating areas like the Caroni Swamp as protected sanctuaries. However, the Caroni Swamp is now under threat from invasive species like feral cats, which pose new risks to the Ibis population. Greater conservation efforts are essential to safeguard these majestic birds and ensure that future generations can continue to marvel at its beauty in the wild.
