Education and Outreach Programs
At the Trinidad and Tobago Bird Observatory and Research Centre (TTBO), our Education and Outreach Programs are designed to foster a deeper connection between people and the natural world, with a special focus on birds and their habitats. By combining scientific principles with hands-on, engaging activities, we aim to inspire individuals of all ages to appreciate the rich biodiversity of Trinidad and Tobago and actively participate in conservation efforts. Our programs reach a broad audience, from students and local communities to international bird enthusiasts, providing a range of learning experiences that bridge the gap between science and the natural environment.

A Holistic Approach to Education and Outreach
Brasso Seco Bird Harvest
One of the highlights of our outreach efforts is the annual Brasso Seco Bird Harvest, an exciting event that celebrates Trinidad and Tobago’s avian diversity while engaging the local community in bird conservation. This festival is a combination of the Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival (CEBF) and World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), creating a vibrant event that honors both resident and migratory bird species. The Bird Harvest features guided bird-watching tours, educational workshops, cultural performances, and family-friendly activities, bringing together bird lovers, local residents, and visitors to celebrate birds and their habitats. Through this festival, participants not only learn about the importance of conserving our bird species but also gain an appreciation for the cultural and ecological significance of birds in our region.
Workshops and Camps
Bridging the Gap Between Science and Nature
TTBO offers a variety of workshops and camps that provide hands-on learning experiences, allowing participants to dive deeper into the science and the broader natural world.
Our birding camps are immersive experiences designed for young nature enthusiasts and future conservationists. These camps offer participants the chance to explore different ecosystems, learn about the ecology of birds, and engage in conservation activities such as bird identification, impressions of nature's art, habitat building activities and wildlife monitoring. By connecting participants with the natural world through these camps, TTBO nurtures a new generation of conservation leaders who are passionate about protecting our biodiversity.
Field Trips
TTBO’s field trips provide unique opportunities for participants to experience Trinidad and Tobago’s diverse ecosystems while learning about bird ecology and conservation. Each trip is carefully crafted to introduce participants to various habitats, from wetlands to forests, and showcase the unique bird species that inhabit them.
Tobago Ecology Field Trip: This trip takes participants to the lush, biodiverse island of Tobago, where they explore its rich ecosystems, including rainforests, coastal areas, and marine environments. Participants observe a wide variety of bird species, including endemic and migratory birds, while learning about the ecological importance of these habitats and the conservation efforts in place to protect them.
Our Education and Outreach Programs are not just about birds; they’re about fostering a deep connection between people and the environment. We believe that conservation begins with education, and our goal is to provide meaningful, hands-on experiences that empower individuals to make a difference. We aim to instill a sense of stewardship and responsibility towards our natural world. By engaging with local communities, schools, and international visitors, we are creating a network of bird enthusiasts, conservationists, and environmental advocates who are working together to protect the unique biodiversity of Trinidad and Tobago. Our programs are designed to inspire and educate, ensuring that future generations understand the value of birds and their habitats, and are equipped with the knowledge and passion to protect them.
